Senate Passes Bill to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday passed without delay to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files related to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by the president and his GOP allies. Trump's team relented after months of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” the Senate Democratic leader said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Uncover the facts. Ensure full disclosure.”

Presidential Signature

The bill next heads to Trump for his approval. Trump stated on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Although the president has for an extended period rejected the outcry over the official management of the Epstein case as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the past few days, and said he would sign the measure if it comes to him.

Reaction

Democrats, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were present in a public section, applauded after the bill was approved. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he was concerned the measure would make public personal information of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
