Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
